About “Vows of the Peacock”
Vows of the Peacock is a chivalric poem written by Jacques de Longuyon between 1312 and 1313 for the Bishop of Liège, Thiébaut de Bar. It portrays courtly life during truces in battle, blending scenes of warfare with an idealized court environment. The poem highlights themes of chivalry and bravery. It ends with a banquet where knights and ladies swear oaths on a decorated peacock. The work was later expanded as a self-contained addition to the Roman d'Alexandre and became widely known through illuminated manuscripts and printed books.
