About “We the Living”

We the Living is the debut novel by Ayn Rand, a Russian-born American author. Set in post-revolutionary Russia, the novel serves as Rand's first public critique of communism. In the foreword, Rand states that the book is the closest she ever came to writing an autobiography. She completed the novel in 1934, but it was rejected by multiple publishers before being released by Macmillan Publishing in 1936. The book has sold more than three million copies since its release.
