About “Who Goes There?”
A 1938 novella follows a scientific expedition at the North Pole that is attacked by an intelligent alien creature, which has been frozen for centuries after a crash. The alien can change its shape and personality, using this ability to kill and replace the expedition members. It tricks the scientists one by one, making them unaware of its presence. The story builds toward the discovery of the alien's weakness, leading to its destruction. The work was inspired by the author's childhood experiences with twins who confused him by switching identities. It is considered a significant horror story in science fiction and was adapted into a famous film and its remake. The novella's copyright was owned by Street & Smith Publications, and film rights were sold for a sum that included a voluntary payment to the author.
