About “Zofloya, or The Moor”

Zofloya; or, The Moor: A Romance of the Fifteenth Century is an 1806 Gothic novel written by Charlotte Dacre under the pseudonym Rosa Matilda. It was her second published work and released in three parts before being compiled into a single volume. The novel was controversial at the time of its release, with critics condemning its themes, particularly its treatment of religion and race. It also faced criticism for its portrayal of female sexuality, which was considered improper. One reviewer described the novel as displaying "an exhibition of wantonness of harlotry."
