Easy Rawlins, a young black veteran in late-1940s Southern California, is fired from his job at an aircraft plant and in danger of losing his home when he accepts a white man's offer to find a mysterious Frenchwoman named Daphne Monet, last seen with a well-known gangster. His search takes him through the mean streets of South Central, after-hours joints, and cheap hotels, aided by the character Mouse, who saves Easy's life while drawing him deeper into the mystery. Published in 1990, it was Mosley's first novel.
