On the edge of uncharted space, Captain Jonathan Archer and the crew of the Starship Enterprise encounter a mysterious alien vessel piloted by the Antianna. Unable to understand the transmissions, Archer avoids conflict and alters the Enterprise's course. The ship soon enters the territory of the Thelasian Trading Confederacy, which has also interacted with the Antianna. Governor Maxim Sen of the Confederacy is preparing a war against the Antianna to protect trade routes. Archer suspects Sen has hidden motives and believes the Antianna's hostility may have a reason. To uncover the truth, Archer turns to Ensign Hoshi Sato, the only crew member capable of translating the Antianna language. Her success could prevent a devastating sector-wide war.
