About “Federalist No. 55”

Federalist No. 55 is an essay written by James Madison, the fifty-fifth in a series of The Federalist Papers. It was published on February 13, 1788, in The New York Packet under the pseudonym Publius. The essay is titled "The Total Number of House of Representatives" and is the first of four papers addressing concerns about the size of the House. Critics argued that the number of representatives was too small to protect the people from a small group of legislators acting against their interests. In this paper, Madison evaluates the appropriate size of the House of Representatives. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
