About “Federalist No. 56”
Federalist No. 56 is an essay written by James Madison, the fifty-sixth in the series of The Federalist Papers. It was published on February 16, 1788, in The New York Packet under the pseudonym Publius. The essay continues the discussion from Federalist No. 55 and focuses on the size of the U.S. House of Representatives. Madison addresses concerns that the House is too small to represent the diverse interests of its constituents. He argues that representatives are responsible for large numbers of people and that the current size of the House is adequate for effective representation.
