About “Planet of Exile”

The Earth colony of Landin has been stranded on the planet Werel for ten years, but ten years on Werel equal over 600 terrestrial years. The small human settlement is growing weary and isolated. Each winter, which lasts 15 years, the Earthmen encounter the humanoid hilfs, a nomadic people who only settle during the harsh cold. The hilfs view the Earthmen as witches and call them farborns. Despite their fear, both groups face common threats: the gaals, a band of barbarians, and the terrifying snow ghouls. Tensions rise as the two groups must decide whether to unite or risk destruction. This 1966 novel by Ursula K. Le Guin explores themes of isolation, fear, and cooperation.
