This 1972 science fiction novella by Ursula K. Le Guin, first published in English as a book in 1976, is set centuries in the future on a tree-covered planet called Athshe by its small, green-furred, big-eyed inhabitants, whose culture centers on lucid dreaming. Terrans have established a logging colony and military base there, and their greed overturns the native society's innocence and wisdom after humans, having learned interstellar travel from the Hainish, form the League of All Worlds and gain the ansible.
