About “The Play of Death”
In 1670, Simon Fronwieser brings his seven-year-old son to boarding school in Oberammergau when news comes of a murder: the man cast to play Christ in the town's Passion Play is found nailed to the set's cross. With no doctor in town, Simon examines the body and, joined by his father-in-law Jakob Kuisl, the Schongau hangman, investigates whether a jealous rival, unpopular immigrant workers, or divine punishment for scheduling the play early is behind the death.
