Harry Hole, an Oslo police detective, is assigned to investigate a series of violent bank robberies. At the same time, he is trying to clear his name after being accused of murdering his former girlfriend. This investigation is being led by his long-time opponent, Tom Waaler, who is supported by a group of vigilante police officers. The story takes place in a 2002 novel by Jo Nesbø.
