A young woman is found murdered in her flat, with a tiny red diamond shaped like a five-pointed star discovered behind her eyelid. Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case, working alongside his long-time rival, Tom Waaler. Initially reluctant, Harry is forced to take the case when he learns Oslo may be dealing with a serial killer. He is also on his final warning, giving him little choice but to confront his personal struggles and return to duty. The 2003 novel by Jo Nesbø follows Harry as he investigates the murder and uncovers a dangerous pattern.
