About “The veiled one”

A woman's body was found between a silver Escort and a dark-blue Lancia in the Barringdean Shopping Centre. The body was hidden under a shroud of dirty brown velvet, making it appear as a heap of rags. Reg Wexford, a chief inspector, was too distracted to notice anything unusual at the scene. Later that evening, he received a call about the murder. The victim had been attacked from behind, possibly with a thin length of cord. Before Wexford could investigate further, he also faced death. Inspector Burden was left to handle the case without Wexford's guidance, leading to several mistaken paths in the investigation. This is a 1988 novel by Ruth Rendell.
