Acting Lieutenant Jim Chee catches a Hopi poacher over a butchered Navajo Tribal police officer, an apparently open-and-shut case until retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, now hired to find a missing female biologist hunting for a virulent plague, complicates matters. The scientist vanished from the same area on the same day the officer was murdered, and a reported skinwalker was seen at the same time and place, leaving Leaphorn and Chee to find answers buried in superstition and science.
