Detective Lincoln Rhyme, a renowned criminalist in the NYPD, is assigned to track the Coffin Dancer, a skilled killer who has avoided capture. Rhyme, who is quadriplegic after a line-of-duty accident, relies on his sharp mind and the help of NYPD officer Amelia Sachs. Together, they analyze trace evidence from crime scenes to uncover the killer's identity and stop him from eliminating three witnesses before their grand jury testimony. The only clue they have is a tattoo on the assassin's arm showing the Grim Reaper waltzing with a woman in front of a coffin.
