Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane marry and go on their honeymoon to Talboys, an old farmhouse in Hertfordshire that Wimsey has purchased as a gift for his wife. The couple hopes to escape their usual lives—Wimsey as a detective and Harriet as a writer—but their vacation turns into a murder investigation when the previous owner of the house is found dead at the bottom of the cellar steps with serious head injuries. The novel, published in 1937, is a mystery by Dorothy L. Sayers.
