In Patricia C. Wrede's 1995 novel, a young woman named Eleret must travel to the city of Ciaron to recover her mother's belongings after she is killed in battle. Eleret sets out on a dangerous journey to retrieve a magical ring her mother owned, a ring etched with a raven. Though she reaches Ciaron safely, she faces challenges on her return trip. She does not understand the ring's significance, but she learns that someone was willing to kill for it. To survive and return home, Eleret must uncover the ring's secrets and the reason her mother died protecting it.
