About “The Hollow Chest”
Witherall returns home after leading the Fifth Form on their annual outing, known as "Egg Day," where the boys play Fox and Hounds. During the trip, they egg a general in a tank and later pick up a stray boy, losing the fox, Sandy Threewit, who is the ward of a wealthy woman. Upon returning, Witherall finds his home ransacked and a bound, blindfolded girl on his bed. After the police arrive and leave, the girl disappears. Mrs. Vandercook, Sandy’s guardian, calls and asks Witherall to dress formally and pick up "George" at a specific location. Instead, he encounters a soldier, the general, and two young women. Together, they uncover the mystery of a dead man in a car, missing bonds, and the fate of Sandy Threewit. The story is by Phoebe Atwood Taylor.
