About “Shinchokusen Wakashū”
The Shinchokusen Wakashū, also known as Shinchokusenshū, is an imperial anthology of Japanese waka poetry compiled in approximately 1234 CE. It was created at the request of the Retired Emperor Go-Horikawa and overseen by the poet Fujiwara no Teika. The collection includes 20 volumes with a total of 1,376 poems. According to Miner and Brower, the anthology reflects Teika's later preference for a simple and plain style of poetry. The selection includes works from several notable poets, with the largest contributions coming from Fujiwara no Shunzei, Fujiwara no Ietaka, Fujiwara no Yoshitsune, Saionji Kintsune, and the priest Jakuren.
