About “Shinsenzai Wakashū”
The Shinsenzai Wakashū is an imperial anthology of Japanese waka poetry completed in 1359. It was commissioned by Emperor Go-Kōgon at the request of the shōgun Ashikaga Takauji and compiled by Fujiwara no Tamesada. The collection consists of twenty volumes containing 2,364 poems. It was created three years after its commission and is considered a mediocre work. However, it reflects the shift of power from the Emperor to military authorities, as the announcement of a new imperial anthology was traditionally an Emperor's exclusive right.
