Lunzie Mespil, a healer who works as both a doctor and psychiatrist, is forced to leave a starship she is traveling on due to desperate circumstances. She takes a lifeboat and plans to enter cryogenic stasis for a month or two while waiting for rescue. However, she remains in stasis for sixty-two years before being found. The story follows how Lunzie adapts to a world that has changed significantly during her long sleep. The Death of Sleep is a science fiction novel written by Anne McCaffrey and Jody Lynn Nye, published in 1990 by Baen Books. It is the second book in the Planet Pirates trilogy and continues the Ireta series that McCaffrey began with Dinosaur Planet in 1978. The other two books in the Planet Pirates series were written by Elizabeth Moon and McCaffrey.
