Through a series of linked stories framed as the recollections of robopsychologist Susan Calvin, this collection traces the early decades of positronic robots and the Three Laws meant to keep them safe. Each tale presents a puzzle in which a machine behaves in some baffling way, and the humans must reason out what the Laws actually compel it to do.
