Richard Sharpe is a soldier known for his bold, professional, and ruthless approach to battle. He demands the same from his men, insisting they fight with the same intensity, steal only from the enemy or the dead, and avoid drinking without his permission. Sharpe faces challenges as he is overlooked for promotion due to his constant presence on the battlefield and must lead an inexperienced company that relies on formal drills. Despite these difficulties, he is eventually promoted to captain, making powerful enemies among the higher ranks. As he prepares for the battle of Talavera, Sharpe fights not only for his men but also for his own honor.
