About “The peacock feather murders”
A 1937 novel by John Dickson Carr features a murderer who sends a formal invitation to Scotland Yard, informing them of the time and location of a planned murder. The police, stunned by the audacity, recall a similar unsolved case from two years prior. Sir Henry Merrivale and Chief Inspector Masters accept the invitation and have the house surrounded. Inside, a furnished room is found. At the appointed time, a shot is heard. When the police enter, they find the same man lying dead with two bullets to his head and spine, but no one else is in the house. The crime appears impossible, yet it occurs.
