In 1991, Peter David wrote a novel in which every thirty-three years, a rift in space connects the Federation with the Calligar, a distant alien race. The USS Enterprise transports a Federation delegation to meet the Calligar during the brief opening of the rift. Mr. Spock leads the group as they travel by shuttle through the rift, but they are taken hostage by the aliens. Kirk learns the Calligar are hiding a dangerous secret. With Tellarite and Andorian fleets preparing to attack, Kirk must rescue Spock and the others before war erupts and the rift closes.
