Hauptmann Fritz Schneider and his men moved through a dark forest, exhausted and weary. Schneider, a Prussian officer, was physically drained, with sweat running down his face. His lieutenant walked beside him, while Underlieutenant von Goss followed at the rear. They were accompanied by a group of askaris, native soldiers, and tired porters. The black soldiers, like their white officer, used bayonets and rifle butts to urge the porters forward. Schneider, unable to find porters nearby, took his frustration out on the nearest askaris, but he was careful not to provoke them, as they were armed and the three white men were alone in the African interior.
