Harry Dresden, a wizard for hire and the only one listed in the Chicago phone book, faces new challenges in this 2006 novel by Jim Butcher. He has a strained relationship with the White Council of Wizards, who find him undisciplined. Due to a shortage of wizards caused by a war with the vampires, the Council has drafted Harry as a Warden to investigate reports of black magic in Chicago. While adjusting to his new role, Harry is drawn into another issue when the daughter of an old friend, now grown and in trouble, becomes a suspect in a supernatural attack. Strange entities that feed on fear are causing chaos in the city, but Harry, along with his dog and a talking skull named Bob, is ready to face the night.
