Orson Scott Card returns to the near-future world of Empire, where the United States has fractured after a violent civil war. The conflict, sparked by deep political divisions, has left the nation in ruins. Averell Torrent, a political scientist and government advisor, rises to the presidency after orchestrating the war. With complete power, he aims to expand American influence globally and eliminate those who know he was responsible for the previous president's assassination.
