About “Memoirs of an Infantry Officer”

The second volume of Siegfried Sassoon's semiautobiographical George Sherston trilogy follows the young Sherston in 1916 as he serves in the trenches of World War I, experiences combat on the Somme, and is wounded by a bullet through the lung. After returning home to convalesce, he questions the war and the British Military establishment, leading him to write a public anti-war letter, which results in his being declared mentally ill due to shell-shock and sent to a hospital for treatment.
