Euripides reworks the legend with a startling premise: the real Helen never went to Troy at all, having been spirited away to Egypt while a phantom took her place. Now stranded and faithful, she fends off a foreign king's marriage demands. When her shipwrecked husband Menelaus arrives believing his Helen lost, recognition and escape become possible.
