About “The Children of Herakles”
Euripides's play concerns the children of the dead Heracles, who flee the relentless persecution of King Eurystheus. Taking refuge as suppliants at an altar near Athens, they are protected by the aged Iolaus and the Athenians, who refuse to surrender them. War with Eurystheus looms, and an oracle demands a costly sacrifice for victory.
