About “Phoenician women”
Euripides sets his sprawling tragedy at Thebes as the sons of Oedipus prepare for civil war. Polynices, exiled and leading a foreign army, returns under truce to meet his brother Eteocles, who refuses to yield the throne. Their blind father lingers within the palace and their mother Jocasta strives in vain to reconcile her warring sons.
