They try to secure reservations on freighter ships, but someone is trying to stop them. Questions arise about McClintock's past and whether a secret conspiracy is at play. A captain's report of a phantom freighter adds to the confusion. Frank and Joe investigate, leading them into a dangerous game with smugglers and a dramatic encounter at sea. Meanwhile, they also help their famous detective father solve a case involving forgers. This updated version of a 1947 novel by Franklin W. Dixon is more politically correct and uses simpler language than the original. The plot's central invention is less believable than in the 1947 version.
