Garth Nix's 2006 novel continues the adventures of Arthur Penhaligon in the Keys to the Kingdom series. After their journey in the Border Sea, Arthur and Leaf return home, but only Leaf successfully enters through the Front Door. Arthur is blocked by an imposter who has taken his place. He is then forced to join the Glorious Army of the Architect, based in the Great Maze, a part of the House under attack by Nithlings. Half the Maze has been destroyed by Nothing, and the Nithlings threaten to overwhelm the Army. While Leaf works to remove Arthur's doppelganger, Arthur must survive training, avoid being sent to the Front, and find a way to free Part Four of the Will and obtain the Fourth Key from Sir Thursday. The story builds toward a critical Nithling offensive.
