About “Friends, Lovers, Chocolate”
The second book in Alexander McCall Smith's Sunday Philosophy Club series follows Isabel Dalhousie, an editor of the Journal of Applied Ethics, and her housekeeper, Grace. When Isabel's niece, Cat, asks her to manage the family delicatessen while she attends a wedding in Italy, Isabel meets a man who has had a heart transplant and is experiencing strange memories. This situation raises philosophical questions for Isabel, particularly about whether the heart is the seat of the soul and if the memories might be linked to the donor's past. Grace is uninterested in the matter, but Isabel is intrigued. Meanwhile, Cat brings home a charming Italian man, who, despite Isabel's suspicions, proves difficult to dismiss. The story presents two mysteries of the heart for Isabel to explore.
