Alexander McCall Smith is a British writer known for his extensive body of work across multiple genres. He was a professor of Medical Law before beginning his writing career. His first book, The White Hippo, a children’s book, was published in 1980. He gained international recognition with the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which has sold over twenty million copies in English. His other series include the 44 Scotland Street novels, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, the von Igelfeld series, and the Corduroy Mansions series. He has also written stand-alone novels such as The Forever Girl and Fatty O’Leary’s Dinner Party, as well as adaptations of classic literature like Emma. In addition to fiction, he has authored non-fiction works, including A Work of Beauty: Alexander McCall Smith’s Edinburgh and What W.H. Auden Can Do For You. He has written over thirty children’s books, including the School Ship Tobermory series. McCall Smith has received numerous awards, including a CBE in 2007 and the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize in 2015. He holds twelve honorary doctorates and has been honored by the President of Botswana for his contributions to literature.
