Where to start with Alexander McCall Smith

Begin with The Colors of All the Cattle, the first book in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, published in 1998. This book introduces Mma Ramotswe, the founder of the first female private detective agency in Botswana, and establishes the series’ gentle tone and focus on moral clarity, everyday wisdom, and the quiet strength of its protagonist. Proceed in publication order through the series, which continues to the most recent book in the sequence. The series is structured as a continuous narrative, with each book building on the previous one while maintaining standalone accessibility. The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series is the most widely recognized of McCall Smith’s works and serves as the most natural entry point into his fiction.
