About “In Search of the Castaways”

On the 26th of July, 1864, the yacht Duncan was moving quickly through the North Channel with a strong northeast wind. The Union Jack flew from the mizzen-mast, and a blue flag with the initials E. G. in gold and a ducal coronet was raised at the topgallant head of the main-mast. The Duncan belonged to Lord Glenarvan, a Scottish peer and a leading member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. He was one of the sixteen Scotch peers in the Upper House. The novel describes this scene as the yacht sets sail.
