About “Old Mortality”
Set in 1679 after the murder of Archbishop Sharpe, this novel depicts rebellion as the Covenanting army challenges the King's forces under Claverhouse. Young Henry Morton of Milnewood, escaping execution by Claverhouse, joins the Covenanters despite deploring their bigotry, with the story building to the Battle of Bothwell Bridge and Morton's trial.
