About “The Black Dwarf”
Set in south-west Scotland in the immediate aftermath of the 1707 Union, this novel was intended to be a story about the first, abortive Jacobite uprising of 1708. Instead it developed into a gothic tale of the supernatural. This new edition brings out virtues in the story long overlaid by Scott's embellishments in later editions.
