In this 2006 novel, the Eqbas plan to arrive at Earth in thirty years to forcibly restore the planet, in part as retribution for humanity's near-extermination of an alien ocean species. Meanwhile the isenj homeworld, Umeh, is torn by civil war after efforts to reduce its population, while immortal ex-cop Shan Frankland, altered by a blood parasite, sets aside her fears to pursue an unfulfilled duty and a righteous vengeance.
