Aleksandr Nikolaevich Ostrovsky (1823–1886) was a Russian playwright, generally considered the greatest representative of the Russian realistic period. He wrote 47 original plays and is credited with almost single-handedly creating a Russian national repertoire; his dramas remain among the most widely read and performed stage pieces in Russia.
