Henry Graham Greene (2 October 1904 – 3 April 1991) was an English writer and journalist known as one of the leading novelists of the 20th century. He wrote over 25 novels and explored moral and political issues of the modern world. Greene combined literary acclaim with popular appeal, writing both serious Catholic novels and thrillers. He was shortlisted for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times. His works The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter won literary prizes, including the Hawthornden Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Greene was awarded the Shakespeare Prize in 1968 and the Jerusalem Prize in 1981. Several of his stories were adapted into films, and he collaborated with filmmaker Carol Reed on The Fallen Idol and The Third Man. He converted to Catholicism in 1926 and later described himself as a "Catholic agnostic."
