Dame Muriel Spark (1918-2006) was a prolific Scottish novelist, short story writer, and poet known for her darkly comedic voice. She won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1965, the Ingersoll Foundation T.S. Eliot Award in 1992, and the David Cohen Prize in 1997, becoming Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1993 and receiving the Golden PEN Award in 1998. She grew up in Edinburgh and published her first novel, The Comforters, in 1957.
