Arkady Natanovich Strugatsky (1925-1991) was a Soviet Russian writer, born in Batumi. As a child he moved with his family to Leningrad, which came under siege in 1942; he left with his father, who did not survive the trip to Vologda. He was later drafted into the Soviet Army and in 1949 graduated from the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, working as a teacher and interpreter for the military until 1955, then as an editor and writer, beginning his lifelong collaboration with his brother Boris in 1958.
