The Master and Margarita is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, written in the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1940. The story follows the devil, known as Professor Woland, and his group as they visit the atheist Soviet Union. Woland challenges the beliefs of the people and criticizes their behavior. The novel mixes supernatural elements, dark comedy, and Christian philosophy. It was not published as a book until 1967, in Paris. A censored version was published in 1966–1967 in a Moscow magazine. A samizdat version, including censored parts, was published in 1969 in Frankfurt. The novel has been translated into many languages and published in various editions.
