About “The White Guard”

The White Guard is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov set in Kiev during the Russian Revolution. It explores the impact of the war on a middle-class family. Upon publication, it became a successful play and brought the author immediate fame, being compared to The Seagull for a new generation. The work faced criticism for its sympathetic depiction of White Army officers. Despite this, it was a favorite of Stalin. The play was banned in 1929, restored in 1932, but not published until 1955.
