Xenophon, also known as Xenophon of Athens, was a Greek historian, soldier, and mercenary born around 431 BC. He was the son of Gryllus and a member of the deme Erchia in Athens. A contemporary of Socrates, he was an admirer of the philosopher and is known for preserving Socrates' sayings. Xenophon wrote about the history of his time, particularly the 4th century BC, and provided detailed accounts of life in ancient Greece and the Persian Empire. He lived until approximately 354 BC.
