About “Hiero”
Hiero is a dialogue written by Xenophon, featuring a conversation between Hiero, the tyrant of Syracuse in Magna Graecia, and the lyric poet Simonides around 474 BC. The dialogue addresses the belief that a tyrant's life is more pleasant than that of a common person. Hiero, who has lived both as a ruler and a private individual, challenges this idea by arguing that a tyrant does not experience greater happiness than an ordinary person. The themes explored in the work are later reflected in the parable of the Sword of Damocles, which deals with the dangers and burdens of power. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
