A Ship of the Law travels through space carrying 82 young people known as the Children, who are trained as fighters, strategists, and scientists. They operate sophisticated non-human technologies within a system that is both obedient and beyond their control, while waging war against entities whose technologies and psychology are vastly superior and ultimately alien.
